Live at The Fabulous Forum, Inglewood, 20 December 2014

“When ‘Songs in the Key of Life’ was out I didn’t do any sort of touring of it,” [Stevie Wonder] said a few minutes later, after the KJLH Gospel Choir had warmed up the crowd. “But as time has gone on it has been truly a journey in my life. I just thank God for giving me these 21 songs and all the experiences behind those songs”…

He turned serious again as he started into the opening instrumental riff of “Living for the City.” “We must use our hearts and our minds and love each other more,” Wonder said. “I hope someday I won’t have to sing this song.” Or maybe someday he can still sing this song - “Living for the City” is truly a magnificent and funky social critique - and know that the world has grown beyond that grim place he’d pictured in its lyrics.

Stevie Wonder doesn’t perform much anymore, but this year is the 39th anniversary of “Songs in the Key of Life,” so his usual Christmas Toy Benefit included a 3:04 rendition of “Songs in the Key of Life” played in its entirety including the 7? bonus record released shortly after the double LP. This is a near-perfect audience recording with some slight crowd chatter, but some secret mojo sauce added to overide some of that. One last note - my first recording with the NBox upgrade, the NBox Platinum …
