Session excerpts from SINATRA AND STRINGS. This one is more frustrating than most, as it has only a handful of complete alternate takes. Sinatra's voice sounds perfectly splendid on the official release, but behind the scenes he was having some difficulties.
A selection that will be of interest to many aficionados is the NEARLY complete take of "Night and Day." This, of course, is one of Sinatra's signature songs, first recorded in 1942 (for RCA, one of his very first recordings as a solo artist, with an arrangement by Axel Stordahl), notably remade in 1956 (for Capitol, with an arrangement by Nelson Riddle), and reworked for SINATRA AND STRINGS by Don Costa (Sinatra's only studio recording of the song to include the opening verse).
The session tape shows that it was originally intended to be longer than the released version, but Sinatra's voice cracked a mere few seconds from the ending, and the decision was made to rerecord it in a more concise fashion.
